Massive Fire Hits Major Kosher Meat Plant in Iowa, Disrupting US Supply

A massive fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the Agri Star kosher meat processing plant in Postville, Iowa, one of the largest kosher slaughterhouses in the United States. The facility processes approximately 18,000 poultry daily. Firefighters from multiple counties battled the blaze for over 24 hours, with thick smoke spreading across Postville and neighboring areas, prompting air quality warnings and advising sensitive residents to stay indoors.

The fire caused severe damage to the plant, but officials have yet to disclose which parts of the complex were destroyed, what equipment remains usable, or when production might resume. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Due to the extensive water used to extinguish the fire, local authorities requested residents to limit water consumption until further notice.

Agri Star was previously owned by Rubashkin, whose former owner, Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, was arrested in a major 2008 immigration raid that detained nearly 400 workers suspected of illegal status. The company later went bankrupt and was acquired in 2009 by SHF Industries, owned by Canadian Haredi businessman Hershey Friedman. Production resumed under the Agri Star brand, but now employees and the local community await damage assessments and decisions on restarting operations.
