Veteran Actor Gavri Banai Declines Role in New 'Givat Halfon' Film After 50 Years

Gavri Banai, the veteran actor and star of the original cult Israeli film "Givat Halfon Doesn't Answer," has refused to participate in the new production "Hill 338," a modern take inspired by the original. Despite the producers offering Banai a shared scene with his longtime colleague Shaike Levi, who agreed to appear in a guest role, Banai expressed disinterest in revisiting the story after five decades, calling the project "pathetic" in an interview with ynet.

The production team emphasized Banai's integral role in the original film's legacy and stated they approached him and Levi with respect and admiration from the outset. However, Banai politely declined, feeling no desire to engage again with the "Givat Halfon" material. Meanwhile, Levi is participating in the new film, which the producers describe as a fresh story paying homage to the classic without being a remake.

Banai continues to perform on stage in the joint show "Everyone Was Banai" alongside his sons Uri and Boaz Banai, maintaining his active presence in Israeli theater. The new film "Hill 338" aims to honor the original's spirit while presenting a distinct narrative, according to the production's official statement.
