Israeli Cult Classic 'Givat Halfon' Inspires New Film 'Giv'a 338' with Fresh Cast and Homages

Fifty years after the beloved Israeli cult comedy "Givat Halfon Does Not Answer" premiered, a new film titled "Giv'a 338" has been produced as a spiritual successor rather than a direct sequel. Directed by Erez Ben Harosh, the film pays tribute to the original while introducing new characters and storylines set in 2026. The title references a lesser-known moment from the original film and the UN ceasefire line from the Yom Kippur War.

The original film, created by the iconic comedy group HaGashash HaHiver, starred Eli Yatzpan as Victor Hasson, a character now reimagined by Shahar Hasson, son of the original actor Shaike Hasson. Shahar Hasson, a successful stand-up comedian making his cinematic debut at age 50, describes the experience as both intimidating and spiritually affirming, feeling he received a blessing from his late father’s legacy. Shaike Levy, the original Victor Hasson, makes a cameo appearance, acknowledging the film’s homage while emphasizing the new direction.

Yael Poliakov, daughter of the original actor Poliakov (Sergio Costanza), also stars, playing the base commander role originally held by Tuvia Tzafir. She reflects on the project as a deeply personal tribute to her father’s work. The production built an entire Israeli Defense Forces base set in the Judean Desert near Jericho, replacing the tents of the original with a fully constructed site.

The film features Gal Linker, a 26-year-old actor with Down syndrome who has long admired the original film, marking a significant step for inclusion in Israeli cinema. The cast and crew emphasize that while "Giv'a 338" contains nods to the classic, it stands on its own with new humor, a fresh love story, and contemporary themes, including references to modern military technology and social issues.

"Giv'a 338" was filmed with respect to the original’s legacy but aims to connect with a new generation.
