Pro-Iranian Militias in Iraq Likely Behind Recent Drone Launches Toward Israel

Within less than two weeks, Israel's defense system intercepted three drones near its borders, raising questions about their origin. The Israeli Air Force shot down a drone near the Jordanian border this morning, following two similar interceptions in the same area yesterday. About ten days ago, another drone was intercepted near the border. None of the drones penetrated Israeli territory, and no alerts were triggered.

Israeli security officials consider three main possibilities for the drone launches. The most plausible is that pro-Iranian militias operating in Iraq are responsible. These militias possess a large arsenal of Iranian drones and have previously targeted Israel, U.S. bases in the region, and Gulf states. Recent drone attacks by Iraqi militias against Saudi Arabia support the assessment that they continue to operate a regional drone front, including against Israel. Security sources believe the drones intercepted yesterday and today were launched from Iraq.

A second possibility is a direct launch from Iran, but security officials assess this as very unlikely at present. Tehran appears to prefer avoiding direct confrontation with Israel, instead relying on its proxies in the region to carry out attacks while maintaining plausible deniability. The third option is that Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched the drones, but this is considered less likely since their main focus currently is on Saudi Arabia.

Since the start of the conflict, drones have become a key weapon for the pro-Iranian axis. Unlike rockets, drones can fly long distances at low altitudes and variable routes, making them harder to detect and intercept. The drone launches come amid regional tensions, with Iran-backed groups seeking to pressure Israel without provoking direct Iranian involvement. Using militias allows Iran to maintain deniability and reduce the risk of immediate escalation.

Israeli security forces are now trying to determine whether these drone attacks are isolated actions by various militias or the beginning of a new escalation aimed at harassing Israel’s home front and wearing down its defense readiness through repeated drone launches.
