Pro-Iranian Militias in Iraq Likely Behind Recent Drone Launches Toward Israel

Within less than two weeks, Israel's defense system intercepted three drones near its borders, raising questions about their origin. The Israeli Air Force shot down a drone near the Jordan border this morning, following two similar interceptions in the same area yesterday. About ten days ago, another drone was intercepted near the border. None of the drones penetrated Israeli territory, and no alerts were activated.

Israeli security officials consider three main possibilities for the source of these drone launches. The most plausible explanation is that pro-Iranian militias operating in Iraq are responsible. These militias possess a large arsenal of Iranian drones and have previously targeted Israel, U.S. bases in the region, and Gulf states. Recent drone attacks by Iraqi militias against Saudi Arabia reinforce the assessment that they continue to operate a regional drone front, including against Israel. Security sources indicate that the drones intercepted yesterday and likely today were launched from Iraq.

Another possibility is a direct launch from Iran, but security officials assess this as highly unlikely at present. Tehran appears to prefer avoiding direct confrontation with Israel and instead relies on its regional proxies to carry out attacks. The third scenario involves drone launches by the Houthi movement from Yemen, but this is considered less probable since the Houthis are currently focused on fighting Saudi Arabia.

Since the start of the conflict, drones have become a key attack tool for the pro-Iranian axis. Unlike rockets, drones can fly long distances at low altitudes and along variable routes, making them harder to detect and intercept. These launches come amid regional tensions where Iran-backed groups seek to pressure Israel without provoking direct Iranian involvement. Using militias allows Iran to maintain plausible deniability and reduce the risk of immediate escalation.

Israeli defense officials are currently assessing whether these drone launches are isolated actions by different militias or the beginning of a new escalation trend aimed at harassing Israel's home front and wearing down its defense readiness through repeated drone attacks.
