Fire in Sderot Industrial Zone Injures Five Firefighters, Causes Evacuations

A large fire broke out on Monday at two locations within the Sha'ar HaNegev industrial area in Sderot, southern Israel. Despite ongoing firefighting efforts, control over the blaze has not yet been achieved. Forty-five firefighting teams, along with engineering equipment and a rapid response unit from the Firefighters College, are actively combating the fire.

Five firefighters sustained light injuries during the operation, with one requiring rescue by the specialized "Lehava" unit. Additionally, one civilian suffered from smoke inhalation. Authorities evacuated personnel from the affected industrial sites and advised residents of the nearby Music neighborhood to remain indoors and close windows as a precaution.

The police have blocked key access routes to Sderot, including Highway 232 from east to west and the entrance from Highway 34 in both directions, urging the public to avoid the area. Israel Railways temporarily suspended service at the Sderot station, though train operations continue normally at other stations in the western Negev and southern regions.

Initial concerns about hazardous material leaks were later dismissed. The fire remains active, and officials continue to assess the situation and provide updates to the public.
