Indian Caregiver Charged with Prolonged Abuse and Sexual Assault of Elderly Israeli Woman

The Haifa District Attorney's Office filed charges on Sunday against Rimai Vijayakumar, a 40-year-old foreign caregiver from India, accused of multiple serious offenses against an approximately 80-year-old woman under her care. The indictment includes sexual offenses by a guardian of a helpless person, indecent acts, and aggravated assault of a helpless individual. The investigation began after the elderly woman's family noticed behavioral changes and installed hidden cameras in her home. Upon reviewing the footage, they reported the suspected abuse to the police.

The Tirat Carmel police station launched a covert investigation that uncovered additional suspected crimes beyond the initial complaint. Vijayakumar was arrested, interrogated, and subsequently detained, with her custody extended repeatedly. According to the indictment submitted by attorney Daniel Ohana, the indecent acts involved the caregiver deliberately exposing her intimate body parts to the elderly woman without consent. The offenses reportedly occurred over several months while the woman was bedridden and fully dependent on her caregiver.

The prosecution has requested to extend Vijayakumar's detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings, with a hearing scheduled for next month. Judge Dr. Zaid Falah approved the extension with the defense's consent. Tirat Carmel police commander Superintendent Ofir Berkovich emphasized the importance of family vigilance and reporting, stating that the police are committed to protecting vulnerable individuals and prosecuting offenders exploiting their weakness.
