Trump Threatens Heavier U.S. Strikes on Iran Tonight
U.S. President Donald Trump issued an unusual social media post on Thursday threatening to expand military action against Iran as soon as later tonight. He wrote that the United States would hit Iran “with great force tonight” and claimed that the country’s navy, air force, radar systems, air defenses and most of its offensive capabilities had “disappeared.”
Trump said the strikes planned for the night would be “bigger and more significant,” but he did not say what the targets would be or how large the operation might be. He also said that “at some point in the not-too-distant future” the United States would seize the island of Kharg and additional oil infrastructure sites in Iran.
According to Trump, such a move would give Washington “total control” over Iran’s oil and gas markets. He compared the idea to U.S. actions against Venezuela and said those steps were working “brilliantly” for both Venezuela and the United States.
The remarks come amid ongoing security tensions between the United States and Iran and reports of continued American military activity in the region.
