Dalia Mazor Honors Chaim Yavin as Israel’s Closest Cinema Star and TV Icon

Dalia Mazor, who co-anchored the "Mabat" news program on Channel One alongside Chaim Yavin, paid tribute to him in a Thursday interview on Kan 11's "This Morning" show. She described Yavin as "the closest thing Israel had to a movie star for many years" and called him "undoubtedly the central and best" figure in Israeli television. Mazor emphasized that the title "Mr. Television" rightfully belongs to Yavin and is irreplaceable.

Mazor highlighted Yavin's unique charisma, authoritative voice, excellent diction, and extraordinary personal charm that shone on screen. She noted his reserved and gentlemanly demeanor, combined with natural authority that required no effort. This authority was partly linked to his aspiration to work in documentary films, where he could express his personal opinions, unlike during his years presenting "Mabat," when no personal opinions were allowed.

Regarding whether Yavin found it difficult to withhold personal views on air, Mazor explained that it was ingrained in the era's journalistic standards, which forbade any personal expression. She also mentioned that many people approach her to express nostalgia for that era of television, clarifying that the longing is not because the past was better, but because it was different.

Chaim Yavin, Israel’s first news anchor and recipient of the Israel Prize, passed away at the age of 93. His career spanned decades marked by wars, peace efforts, and political shifts, making him a pioneering figure in Israeli media history.
