Chaim Yavin's Early Football Passion Shaped His Iconic Israeli TV Career

Chaim Yavin, a pioneering figure in Israeli public broadcasting and a key developer of Israeli television, passed away at the age of 93 on Wednesday. While widely recognized as Israel's national news anchor, few know about his early deep connection to sports, particularly football. During his university years, Yavin was an active athlete who played football for Hapoel Jerusalem and later for Hapoel Kiryat Ata.

In a past interview on the program "In a Personal Signature" with Dan Margalit, Yavin shared how sports helped him integrate into Israeli society, describing how he embraced the local culture by playing football and engaging in outdoor activities. This passion for sports also played a crucial role during a personal crisis, leading him to seek refuge in athletics. One morning after a difficult night, he decided to try sports and ended up visiting Kol Israel, where he inquired about announcer positions.
