Tel Aviv University Tops Israeli Research Excellence Ranking at 206th Globally
The Taiwan Research Excellence Ranking released on Wednesday places Tel Aviv University as the leading Israeli academic institution, rising seven spots from last year to 206th worldwide. Despite this improvement, no Israeli university broke into the top 200, mirroring last year's outcome. Following Tel Aviv University, the Hebrew University ranks 263rd, the Weizmann Institute of Science 310th, Technion 382nd, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in the 501-550 range, Bar-Ilan University 801-850, and University of Haifa 851-900.
Israel often views itself as a significant research leader, with several universities regularly appearing in the top 100 of the Shanghai Ranking, which emphasizes research quality through Nobel laureates and citation metrics. However, the Taiwan ranking, which focuses solely on research output, publication quality, and impact, shows results more aligned with the QS ranking, where Israeli universities rank lower.
The ranking also assessed universities by academic fields. Israeli institutions scored below their overall rankings in areas considered national strengths, such as agriculture and engineering. However, there were relatively better results in medicine, with Tel Aviv University ranked 101st, and life sciences, where Tel Aviv and the Weizmann Institute placed 130th and 185th respectively.
This ranking highlights ongoing challenges for Israeli academia in achieving higher global research recognition despite improvements in some areas. The report also noted recent resignations of five members of the Council for Higher Education in Israel over a gender segregation law in academia, reflecting broader tensions in the academic sector.
