Israeli Hip Hop Documentary Chronicles Genre's Rise From Underground to National Stage

The new documentary series "Black Gold" traces the evolution of Israeli hip hop from its underground beginnings in the 1990s to becoming a major part of the country’s national music scene. The series highlights the pioneering role of the band Shabak S', which laid the foundation for Hebrew rap in the mid-90s, transforming the genre from a niche subculture into a widely recognized soundtrack. Created over three years by directors Rom Atik and Amri Dekel-Kadosh, the series features rare archival footage and a mix of animation and scripted storytelling to capture the authentic 1990s hip hop atmosphere.

Shabak S' members Nimrod Reshef (Nimi Nim) and Danny Karak (Filoni) share insights into the challenges they faced, including balancing personal commitments and band dynamics during their rise. The series also explores the broader Israeli hip hop scene, spotlighting influential figures like producer Yossi Fine and the radio show "Black Business" on Galgalatz, which helped popularize the genre. The documentary does not shy away from the political and social conflicts that have shaped Israeli hip hop, including the genre’s split in the 2000s between nationalist voices like Subliminal and HaTzel and peace-promoting groups such as Hadag Nahash.

Despite ongoing tensions and the impact of regional violence, Shabak S' continues to produce music, viewing it as a vital outlet and source of healing. The series also documents hip hop’s mainstream breakthrough, exemplified by artists like Tuna and Ravid Plotnik selling out large venues in 2023. Both Nimrod and Danny express pride in the new generation of Israeli rappers and emphasize how they challenged traditional musical norms to establish Hebrew rap as a distinct and respected art form. Nimrod reflects, "Who would have believed you could do rap in Hebrew?" while Danny notes the significance of songwriting as a form of personal expression beyond traditional singing.

"Black Gold" premiered its first two episodes at the Docaviv festival and is now available on Kan 11, offering a comprehensive and intimate look at the struggles and triumphs that shaped Israeli hip hop into a cultural force.
