Nauru Decides to Open Embassy in Jerusalem, Becoming Tenth Country to Do So

The cabinet of Nauru has approved the opening of its embassy in Israel, to be located in Jerusalem, Israel's capital. This move will make Nauru the tenth country to establish an embassy in Jerusalem and the fifth to do so during the tenure of Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar. The decision follows a diplomatic agreement reached between Sa'ar and Lionel Rouwen Aingimea, Nauru's Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Commerce, and Justice, during their meeting in Fiji in June. This meeting coincided with the inauguration of Israel's embassy in Fiji, where Aingimea was present.

Nauru has been a consistent supporter of Israel in the United Nations and has submitted legal opinions backing Israel in cases before the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The island nation officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2019. Located in the Micronesian region of the North Pacific, Nauru is a small island state situated just south of the equator, near other Micronesian countries such as the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau, and Kiribati.

The embassy is expected to open in the coming months, further strengthening diplomatic ties between Nauru and Israel. This development also follows a similar agreement Sa'ar reached last week with Colombia's incoming foreign minister regarding embassy placement.
