Nauru to Open Official Embassy in Jerusalem, Becoming Tenth Country to Do So

Following a diplomatic agreement between Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Nauru's Vice President and Foreign Minister Lionel Aingimea, the government of the Pacific island nation of Nauru has officially decided to open an embassy in Jerusalem. This move will make Nauru the tenth country to establish a diplomatic mission in Israel's capital and the fifth to do so since Sa'ar took office as Foreign Minister.

The decision was announced by Nauru's cabinet on Wednesday, following a meeting between Sa'ar and Aingimea in June in Fiji, where Sa'ar attended the opening of Israel's embassy. The new embassy is expected to open in the coming months, further strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

Sa'ar expressed gratitude to Nauru's President David Adeang and Aingimea for the decision, calling Nauru a "true friend of Israel." He emphasized that the embassy's opening will deepen ties between Israel and Nauru.

Nauru is a small island country in the North Pacific, south of the equator, and is part of the Micronesian group of nations. It has been a consistent supporter of Israel in the United Nations and has provided legal backing for Israel in proceedings at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Nauru officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital in 2019, and the establishment of the embassy marks the culmination of this recognition.
