Jerusalem Balcony Collapse Linked to Unreported Structural Issues, City Orders Usage Ban

A preliminary investigation by the Jerusalem Municipality into the recent balcony collapse on KKL Street revealed that residents noticed stones falling from the balcony and independently hired a professional without notifying the city. The municipality stated it had not received any prior complaints or warnings about safety concerns related to the balconies or the building before the incident.

Municipal teams coordinated with rescue forces to clear the site and remove hazards late into the night. The building and its balconies were legally constructed in 1952. The city emphasized that it regularly enforces regulations against unauthorized balcony constructions.

Initial engineering inspections by municipal structural engineers and an expert contractor found no immediate danger in the remaining balconies. However, a dangerous building order was issued, prohibiting the use of all balconies until a thorough safety evaluation is completed to prevent potential failures.

The municipality highlighted this rare and unfortunate event as underscoring the importance of advancing urban renewal processes, which it is actively promoting. Residents are urged to report any balcony safety concerns to the city’s 106 hotline, which promptly involves the dangerous buildings department. City engineers then assess the site, mark unsafe areas with red tape, ban usage, and inform nearby residents accordingly.
