Jerusalem Municipality Urges Immediate Balcony Safety Checks After Fatal Collapse in Rehavia

Following a tragic balcony collapse on KKL Street in Jerusalem's Rehavia neighborhood that killed an approximately 80-year-old man and injured three others, the Jerusalem Municipality issued an urgent directive to property owners. The incident occurred when a second-floor balcony from a 1950s building collapsed onto the Angel Bakery below. The victim's wife and two teenagers aged 16 and 17 sustained light injuries.

The municipality called on owners and occupants of cantilevered balconies built before 1980 to conduct immediate structural assessments by certified engineers. These balconies, which lack supporting columns, require thorough inspection to prevent similar disasters. The city's Dangerous Buildings Department emphasized that maintenance responsibility lies with property owners and users, as mandated by Jerusalem's Dangerous Buildings bylaws and Israeli building maintenance standards.

The required engineering inspection must evaluate the balcony's structural system, anchorage, load-bearing elements, signs of wear such as corrosion, cracks, or concrete deterioration, and its capacity to bear expected loads. The municipality urged owners to seek professional advice and act promptly if defects or engineering concerns are found. Residents were also encouraged to report any relevant information or inspection findings to the Dangerous Buildings Department.

Police have launched an investigation into the collapse, including possible criminal inquiries. Notably, an engineer had visited the site earlier the same day due to concerns about the balcony's condition and provided instructions, but the collapse occurred hours later. This directive aims to enhance public safety and prevent future tragedies involving aging structures in Jerusalem.
