Religious Zionist Rabbis Respond to Rabbi Lando’s Criticism of Religious Soldiers

Following controversial remarks by Rabbi Dov Lando accusing Religious Zionist soldiers of inciting murder and fighting wars for state honor rather than salvation, leading rabbis from the Religious Zionist community convened to decide on a response. The meeting included prominent figures such as Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, president of the Good Land Rabbis organization, and other senior rabbis including David Hai Cohen, Eitan Eiseman, Shmuel Eliyahu, and Yossi Artziell. They issued a joint letter emphasizing the importance of love among Jews and caution in speech, quoting traditional Jewish teachings to promote restraint and unity during a time of mourning for national tragedies. The letter also expressed strong support for IDF soldiers, highlighting their dedicated service as both a privilege and a significant religious duty.

At the same time, Religious Zionist leader and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich carefully avoided directly criticizing Rabbi Lando, acknowledging the complexity of the issue and urging caution in addressing the statements. Smotrich referenced Rabbi Ariel’s advice to focus on restraint and compassion, especially during the solemn period of Tisha B’Av.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially condemned Rabbi Lando’s remarks without naming him, affirming full support and deep appreciation for all IDF soldiers, religious and secular alike, who risk their lives to protect Israel and its citizens. Meanwhile, Blue and White party chairman Benny Gantz sharply criticized Rabbi Lando’s statements and linked the broader issue to the current government’s leadership, calling for a change in government to remove extremist influences and ensure a broad Zionist coalition that prioritizes the future of Israeli society and its youth.
