Rabbi Dov Lando Clarifies Remarks Amid Controversy Over Criticism of Religious Zionism

Rabbi Dov Lando, head of the yeshiva, addressed the recent uproar following statements he made in a private conversation with leaders of the Mir Yeshiva, which were interpreted as critical of the Religious Zionist sector. He emphasized that his words were misunderstood and distorted, explaining that during the "bein hazmanim" period, it is important to avoid ideological disputes, especially with those who, under the guise of faith, oppose Torah and its scholars and fail to grasp the perspectives of great rabbis such as the Chazon Ish and Rabbi of Brisk.

Rabbi Lando made these clarifications during a gathering of community rabbis organized by the Union of Yeshiva Sons. He stressed that his views align with those of his revered teachers and that the recent reactions stemmed from misinterpretations fueled by hostility.

The controversy drew a response from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who condemned the criticism of the Religious Zionist community, stating that some within this group serve in the army and engage in combat, which he framed as a moral issue. Speaking at a Hesder Yeshiva in Tefahot, Smotrich acknowledged the complexity of the situation, urging caution in speech out of respect for the sages and quoting a verse from Psalms to emphasize restraint and integrity in discourse, especially on the eve of Tisha B'Av.
