IDF Builds Massive Barrier Dividing Gaza Strip Amid Expanded Ground Control

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is rapidly constructing a large earthen barrier that separates the area under its control in the Gaza Strip from the western part controlled by Hamas, according to satellite images released Tuesday by the Associated Press. The Washington Post reported that over 23 kilometers of this barrier have been built in recent months, covering more than half the length of the Gaza Strip.

The IDF confirmed to AP that the physical barrier is being erected along the "yellow line," the boundary to which Israeli forces withdrew under the ceasefire agreement signed last October, which included the release of all hostages. This line was established as a temporary division of territory supported by the United States, pending a more comprehensive Israeli withdrawal. Alongside the barrier, the IDF is developing a "security zone" equipped with intelligence and technological assets to prevent infiltrations into Israel and protect soldiers and residents near Gaza.

About two weeks ago, the newspaper Al-Sharq Al-Awsat reported that Israel had significantly expanded its ground presence inside Gaza by pushing the yellow line deeper into the territory. Israeli control now extends to nearly all parts of Gaza, including areas up to Salah al-Din Street, the main north-south road. The expanded control affects Khan Yunis in the south, Deir al-Balah, Al-Masdar, Al-Maraazi, Wadi Gaza in central Gaza, and neighborhoods such as Shuja'iyya, Tuffah, Jabalia camp, and Al-Atatra in the north.

The report detailed intensified Israeli military activity in these areas, including artillery fire, airstrikes, drone attacks, and ground operations, resulting in casualties and displacing thousands of families westward. Last month, Channel 13 News revealed an IDF presentation outlining Hamas's military preparations for another conflict, highlighting focused training for elite units, recruitment of young fighters aged 18 to 22 dubbed the "next generation," and increased production of explosives and rockets. The presentation also noted a rise in smuggling operations bringing in drone parts and other weaponry through border crossings.

These developments indicate heightened tensions and ongoing military maneuvers in Gaza as Israel fortifies its control and Hamas prepares for potential renewed hostilities.
