Finance Minister Smotrich Defends National Religious Yeshivas Amid Rabbi Lando Controversy

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich addressed the controversy sparked by Rabbi Dov Lando's harsh remarks against National Religious soldiers during a visit to a Hesder Yeshiva in Tefahot in the Galilee. Smotrich acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue, stating, "It is a great dilemma, on one hand we cannot remain silent, and on the other, we must be careful with the words of our sages." He consulted Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, who advised caution and referenced a verse from Psalms emphasizing careful speech.

Smotrich emphasized pride in the National Religious sector's worldview and its Torah institutions, describing them as "living and illuminating Torah of the Land of Israel," which sees the State of Israel as a redemption. He highlighted the sector's broad participation in military service and reserve duty, framing it as a vital mitzvah and an expression of devotion to the land and faith.

The controversy began after a recorded conversation at Rabbi Lando's residence, where he sharply criticized "the knitted kippah [National Religious]" soldiers, calling some of them "wicked" and equating their fight for the state's honor to murder. This provoked widespread public outcry and a strong rejection from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who condemned the remarks. In response, the ultra-Orthodox party Degel HaTorah issued a statement defending the sanctity of the sages' words and warning against misinterpretation or attack.

Smotrich's comments sought to balance respect for Torah authorities with pride in the National Religious community's contributions to Israeli society and security, underscoring the sector's commitment to Torah values and the state.
