New York City Council member Inna Vernikov has called on U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to investigate whether Mayor Zoharan Medadani's threat to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his upcoming visit to New York violates American law. In a sharply worded letter, Vernikov urged the State Department to consider legal and criminal measures against Medadani, emphasizing that "the threat must have consequences." She accused the mayor of exceeding his authority and interfering in foreign affairs beyond his jurisdiction.

The controversy erupted after Medadani told The New York Times he was exploring legal options to detain Netanyahu upon his arrival in Manhattan for the United Nations General Assembly in the fall. Medadani stated, "I believe Prime Minister Netanyahu belongs in The Hague," referring to the International Criminal Court, and noted that active discussions on the matter were ongoing.

Medadani's remarks sparked strong criticism from New York and U.S. politicians. New York State Assemblyman Kalman Yeger called Medadani "delusional," while Democratic Senator John Fetterman labeled him a "clown." Vernikov's letter to Rubio demands a formal warning and legal assessment to determine if Medadani's actions warrant federal prosecution.
