Netanyahu Attends Likud Constitution Committee Meeting on Primary Election Changes

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived at a resumed meeting of the Likud Constitution Committee on Sunday to discuss changes to the party's primary election system and reserved spots on the candidate list for the 26th Knesset. The meeting, chaired by Minister Haim Katz, was convened following a Likud party court ruling that ordered a reevaluation of the proposed changes after a legal dispute halted their approval last Thursday.

The committee is considering allowing electronic voting in the event of a security escalation, a shift from the previously proposed organizing committee system. This adjustment follows Netanyahu's remarks earlier that day at a conference with Likud local leaders. However, the party court ruled that Netanyahu cannot introduce new proposals beyond those submitted last Thursday, preventing him from presenting his updated plan to expand the national list and slightly reduce reserved spots, as well as the clause about establishing an organizing committee if security conditions require it.

Unexpectedly, Deputy Minister Almog Cohen attended the meeting and met with Netanyahu. When asked about the possibility of reserved spots or a party switch, Cohen responded, "Only God knows." The discussions continue amid ongoing legal and political maneuvering within Likud ahead of the upcoming elections.
