Teen Finds Bat in Air Conditioner, Hospitalized for Rabies Prevention in Haifa

A 15-year-old boy from the Haifa area was urgently treated at Rambam Medical Center's pediatric emergency department after discovering a bat inside his home's air conditioner. The boy heard strange noises coming from the unit and found a small bat hiding there. When he tried to release the bat, it secreted a substance that fell on his face and entered his mouth. Meanwhile, the family cat also reacted by catching the bat.

Recognizing the potential risk, the boy sought medical evaluation at Rambam. Riyad Sheikh, head nurse at the pediatric emergency unit, explained that any contact with a bat requires serious medical attention according to Ministry of Health guidelines. Even without visible injury or direct bite, bats are considered immediate suspects for rabies transmission, necessitating preventive treatment.

The boy received the recommended rabies prophylaxis, and similar treatment was advised for the family cat. After completing the preventive measures, the boy was discharged in good condition. The hospital emphasized the importance of prompt medical care in such cases to avoid health risks associated with bats.
