Teenager Rushed to Hospital After Bat Incident in Home Air Conditioner

A 15-year-old boy from the Haifa area was urgently taken to the pediatric emergency department at Rambam Medical Center after encountering a bat inside his home's air conditioner. The incident began when the boy heard strange noises coming from the air conditioning unit and discovered a small bat hiding inside. While attempting to free the bat, the boy felt that the bat's excretion fell on his face and entered his mouth. At the same time, the family cat noticed the bat and caught it.

Recognizing the potential health risk, the boy sought immediate medical evaluation. Riyad Sheikh, the head nurse at Rambam's pediatric emergency department, explained that according to Israeli Ministry of Health guidelines, any contact with bats requires serious medical attention due to the risk of rabies transmission. Even without visible wounds or direct contact, bats are considered immediate suspects for carrying the disease, and preventive treatment is mandatory.

The boy received rabies prophylaxis at the hospital and was discharged in good condition with advice to provide similar treatment to the family cat. The medical staff emphasized the importance of not taking any risks in such cases.
