Iranian Foreign Minister Admits Intelligence Breach Exposed in Attempted Assassination of Khamenei Remains Unresolved

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi acknowledged on July 26 that the attempted assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei early in the ongoing conflict revealed a serious intelligence breach in Iran that has yet to be fixed. Araghchi said Israel’s knowledge of meetings held at the compound where Khamenei was staying was due to a continuing intelligence failure. He described the meetings as routine but said the enemy’s awareness of them was the result of a vulnerability that "likely still exists and has not been resolved." Araghchi recounted being at Khamenei’s residence on the morning of the attack, meeting with the president at 8:00 a.m. and then with Khamenei’s chief of staff, Ali Asghar Hejazi, at 9:00 a.m. to deliver a negotiation report. During his conversation with Hejazi about the tense security situation, the compound was attacked. He did not specify how the information about the meetings leaked but emphasized the ongoing nature of the intelligence gap. This admission highlights significant security challenges within Iran amid the current war.
