Iranian Foreign Minister Acknowledges Intelligence Breach in Attempted Assassination of Khamenei

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi admitted on July 26 that the attempted assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei early in the ongoing conflict revealed a serious intelligence breach in Iran that remains unresolved. He stated that Israel's knowledge of meetings held at the complex where Khamenei was staying was due to a continuing intelligence failure. Araghchi described that holding meetings at that time was not unusual, but the enemy's awareness of them indicated a vulnerability that "likely still exists and has not been fixed."

Araghchi recounted that he was present at Khamenei's residence on the morning of the attack. At 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, he met with the president and noted the tense atmosphere, saying, "There is a feeling of war." An hour later, he met with Ali Asghar Hejazi, Khamenei's chief of staff, to deliver a negotiation report, which Hejazi would typically pass on to the Supreme Leader. During this meeting, the complex was attacked. Araghchi emphasized the timing, saying, "While I was talking about the tense war atmosphere, the place was attacked."

He did not specify how the information about the meetings was leaked but stressed the intelligence gap remains a critical issue. This admission highlights ongoing security challenges within Iran amid heightened regional tensions.
