Mossad Supports Lifetime Security for Netanyahu and Family Following Shin Bet Recommendation
A day after Shin Bet chief David Zini recommended lifetime security for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sarah, Mossad head Roman Gofman also submitted a supporting opinion. According to a report by Channel 13 on Thursday evening, Gofman's assessment presented to the professional committee stated there is an "unlimited time threat" against the Netanyahu couple and their children. However, the authority to determine the security level remains with Shin Bet, not Mossad.
The Cabinet Committee on Shin Bet Affairs, chaired by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, approved Zini's recommendation on the same day. The decision grants security protection to Netanyahu, his wife, and their children, Yair and Avner, for the next five years. Earlier this week, it was reported that Netanyahu is advancing a plan to extend security arrangements for former prime ministers' families for several years after their terms end.
Discussions on this matter, initially scheduled for the Cabinet Committee on Shin Bet Affairs, were postponed due to reservations raised by the National Security Council regarding one of the security provisions. Last year, the committee secretly approved increased security for Netanyahu's family abroad and for other ministers, following Netanyahu's efforts to expand security coverage. Previous attempts to broaden security during a government meeting faced criticism from Shin Bet amid judicial system disputes.
