Inter Confirms Anan Halaily Transfer Collapse Due to Failed Medical Exams
Inter Milan president Giuseppe Marotta officially announced on Monday that the transfer of winger Anan Halaily from Union Saint-Gilloise to the Italian club has fallen through. Halaily failed the initial medical tests, and after further examinations requested by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), he was not cleared as fit to play. This means Halaily will be unable to join Inter or any other team in Italy.
Dr. Ohad Segal, a senior orthopedic surgeon and sports injury specialist at Maccabi Healthcare Services in Ra'anana, explained that heart screenings for professional athletes aim to detect findings that might be insignificant in the general population but critical for those training and competing at high intensity. An abnormal screening result does not necessarily indicate heart disease or the end of a career but usually signals the need for more detailed testing.
Segal noted that athletes' hearts undergo physiological changes from prolonged training, which can appear unusual in initial tests. However, some findings may indicate hereditary heart conditions or risks of arrhythmias and cardiac events during exertion. Determining the seriousness of such findings requires comprehensive evaluation by a cardiologist, often with a sports cardiology specialist. He emphasized that the need for further investigation is a professional step to ensure the athlete's health and safety, not a cause for immediate concern.
