Police Uncover Brutal Abuse at Ariel Daycare After Reviewing 2,400 Hours of Footage

Israeli police have uncovered a severe child abuse case at a daycare center in Ariel, following the review of approximately 2,400 hours of security footage. The investigation was prompted by a complaint from an animal handler who witnessed a caregiver placing a toddler in a dark room. Initially hesitant to launch a criminal investigation, police in Ariel, led by the station commander and investigations officer, decided to pursue the report. This decision led to the seizure of security cameras and the examination of their recordings, which revealed hundreds of alleged instances of severe and systematic abuse against infants.

Within three days of reviewing the footage, police arrested the daycare owner and two caregivers on suspicion of abusing helpless children. The extensive review, conducted by about 30 investigators and volunteers over four days, uncovered hundreds of incidents. Allegations include choking infants for up to 30 seconds until they lost consciousness, allegedly to make them sleep, as well as shaking, throwing, hitting, and withholding food from toddlers. A senior source involved in the investigation described it as one of the most severe cases of abuse and cruelty against helpless minors the police have ever encountered.

The severity of the findings was also noted in the Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court, where proceedings are underway. The judge remarked that the investigators had gathered enough evidence not only for indictments but also for convictions. A prosecutor from the Jerusalem District Attorney's office is overseeing the investigation, and police anticipate filing a prosecutorial statement for the caregivers next week, followed by indictments. Authorities intend to seek the continued detention of the suspects until the proceedings conclude, given the gravity of the alleged offenses.

Parents whose children attended the daycare are reportedly in shock and struggling to process the alleged abuse. One mother described graphic accounts of choking and infants being thrown like balls. She expressed deep concern that her own daughter may have been subjected to abuse throughout the past year, noting a change in her daughter's behavior this year, including reluctance to attend daycare. She had even planned to enroll her six-month-old son in November. The mother also recounted her own interactions with the daycare director, who she claims maintained a facade of normalcy and authority, making it difficult for parents to question the staff's conduct. She also raised suspicions about the director's insistence on written medical approvals for even single-day absences due to illness, though she admits this is speculation.

Another detail that raised questions for the mother was the limited photo sharing from the daycare, with parents only receiving weekly compilations on Fridays. She recalled instances where her daughter was absent from all photos, which she found odd. The mother emphasized the importance of parental communication and comparison of children's behavior changes, urging other parents to share information and seek full transparency from daycare facilities. She also mentioned another father who was deeply distressed after viewing the footage. The overarching question for the parents remains how the daycare staff managed to gain their full trust while allegedly committing such severe acts of violence.
