Retired Judge Asher Grunis announced on Friday his resignation as chairman of the state commission of inquiry into the submarine affair, citing health reasons. Supreme Court President Yitzhak Amit has appointed retired Supreme Court Judge Tzvi Zilberthal, already a member of the commission, to replace Grunis. Amit also appointed Judge Ruth Lorenc as a new member. The remaining commission members, Professor Karnit Flug, Gideon Frank, and Brigadier General Professor Yaakov Bortman, will continue their service.

Grunis also heads the committee for senior appointments in the civil service and will need to find a replacement for that role as well. This is not the first instance of a chairman of a state commission of inquiry being replaced. In 2022, following the death of retired Supreme Court President Miriam Naor, former Tel Aviv District Court President Devorah Berliner succeeded her in that position.
