Following a home victory against Baskonia on Thursday, Greek basketball club Panathinaikos is reportedly pursuing new center acquisitions from the NBA due to several player injuries. Serbian outlet "Telesport" reported that the team's coaching staff identified eight potential candidates, from whom coach Željko Obradović selected two: James Wiseman and Charles Bassey. Both players are currently with NBA teams, with Wiseman playing for the New York Knicks and Bassey for the Golden State Warriors.
The club's search for a center began over the summer when player Mustapha Fall suffered an injury that significantly impacted his preseason preparation. Additionally, Mathias Lessort has been experiencing physical instability, prompting the team's desire for another player to bolster depth at the center position.
Wiseman, 25, was the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. He is currently on a minimum contract with the Knicks but could be released due to limited playing time. Obradović had previously sought to sign Bassey twice when coaching Partizan, but the player opted for the NBA.
Notably, Hapoel Tel Aviv had previously considered signing Wiseman as a third center for their EuroLeague roster about two months ago, but ultimately signed Bruno Caboclo instead.
