Hezbollah Drone Strike Kills Israeli Tank Commander and Three Soldiers in Southern Lebanon

An Israeli Defense Forces investigation has confirmed that a Hezbollah explosive drone struck an Israeli Merkava Mark 4 tank on June 19 near the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, causing a deadly explosion that killed four soldiers. The drone, reportedly armed with an anti-tank weapon likely an RPG, hit the tank's left rear fuel tank, triggering a massive blast that penetrated the crew compartment.

Among the fatalities were Lieutenant Colonel Dor Ben Shimon, commander of the 52nd Armored Battalion, and three of his crew members: Sergeant First Class Noh Habshush, the gunner and tank commander in training; Sergeant First Class Yoav Klein, the loader; and Sergeant First Class Liav Kabbaya, the driver. The incident is under ongoing investigation by the IDF's 36th Division and the Armored Corps, including a review of the tank's active protection system "Trophy" to improve defenses against aerial threats.

The IDF officially confirmed the findings following the initial inquiry and expressed condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. The military continues to investigate the circumstances of the attack and is committed to supporting the bereaved families.
