IDF Confirms Explosive Drone Caused Fatal Tank Incident in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that a preliminary investigation into the June 19 tank disaster in southern Lebanon revealed that an explosive drone struck the tank. The attack resulted in the deaths of Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Shimon, commander of the 52nd Battalion, and three soldiers: Staff Sergeants Noh Habshush, Yoav Klein, and Liav Kabbaya. The IDF conveyed the information to the families, expressing condolences and pledging continued support.

The incident occurred near the village of Tabnit, where a "suspicious target" hit the tank operated by the 52nd Armored Battalion under the Givati Brigade's battalion combat team command. Initially, the IDF could not conclusively confirm the cause as a drone strike, but the latest update affirmed this finding while noting the investigation is ongoing.

Lieutenant Colonel Ben Shimon had assumed command of the 52nd Battalion two months prior, replacing a predecessor severely wounded in combat. He had a distinguished career in the Armored Corps, particularly within the 401st Brigade, known for his leadership and professionalism. Staff Sergeant Habshush, from the settlement of Geva Binyamin-Adam, recently completed tank commander training and planned to attend officer school. Staff Sergeant Klein, from Herzliya, was a talented basketball player and described by friends as a selfless individual. Staff Sergeant Kabbaya, a graduate of the cinema track at Mosinson High School in Hod Hasharon, was passionate about family, friends, football, and photography.

The IDF continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and remains committed to supporting the bereaved families.
