IDF Attributes South Lebanon Tank Tragedy to Hezbollah Explosive Drone Attack
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released an initial investigation on Sunday into the tank disaster in southern Lebanon that killed Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gedalia Ben Shimon, commander of Battalion 52, along with soldiers Staff Sergeants Noh Habshush, Yoav Klein, and Liav Kabbaya. According to the findings, the tank was struck by an explosive drone operated by Hezbollah. The IDF emphasized that the incident remains under investigation.
Lieutenant Colonel Ben Shimon had assumed command of Battalion 52 about two and a half months earlier, following the severe injury of the previous commander, Lieutenant Colonel Or Yol, during combat. Ben Shimon was a veteran of the 401 Armored Brigade, where he held most of his significant command roles. He is survived by his wife, who also serves as a combat officer in the Combat Intelligence Corps, and their two daughters.
At the time of the incident, the IDF initially reported that a "suspicious aerial target" had hit the tank near the village of Tabnit, but it was not immediately confirmed that it was an explosive drone. In response to the attack, the IDF struck multiple Hezbollah infrastructure sites in Nabatiyeh and other areas in southern Lebanon, where dozens of casualties were reported.
