IDF Investigation Finds Explosive Drone Hit Tank Killing Battalion Commander in South Lebanon
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed on Sunday that an initial investigation into the June 19 incident in South Lebanon revealed a tank was struck by an explosive drone. The attack killed Lieutenant Colonel Dor Gdalia Ben Shimon, commander of Battalion 52, along with three other soldiers: Staff Sergeants Noh Habshush, Yoav Klein, and Liav Kabbaya.
The tank was hit on its rear by the drone, which caused a fire that triggered an ammunition explosion inside the crew compartment. Earlier reports had suggested the tank was targeted by Kornet anti-tank missiles fired by Hezbollah, but the IDF clarified the cause was a drone strike. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The IDF spokesperson stated that the families of the fallen soldiers have been informed and expressed condolences, emphasizing that the military will continue to support them. The incident occurred during operations in southern Lebanon, highlighting the evolving threats faced by Israeli forces in the area.
