A severe heatwave that paralyzed Western Europe last week has now spread to central and eastern parts of the continent, breaking temperature records in countries including Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Denmark. In Basel, Switzerland, temperatures exceeded 38 degrees Celsius, while Odense in northern Denmark recorded a new national high of 36.6 degrees. The Czech Republic experienced its hottest day ever with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees in Doksany, and forecasts predict further increases. Germany expects some cities to reach 40 degrees Celsius by the weekend, with meteorologist Karsten Brandt warning that the heatwave will peak with temperatures above 40 degrees in parts of the country.

The extreme heat has caused infrastructure damage, including concrete explosions at two locations along the German autobahn, leading to road closures. The German railway company Deutsche Bahn advised against non-essential travel due to severe impacts on transportation infrastructure and offered full refunds for canceled tickets. Poland issued heat warnings with forecasts near 40 degrees and urged residents to avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and check on elderly neighbors. Authorities also expressed concern about the increased risk of wildfires.

The heatwave, which began last week, has already resulted in dozens of deaths in France and the UK, including drownings as people sought relief in water. French authorities slightly lowered temperature warnings but maintained restrictions such as banning alcohol consumption in public spaces to reduce hospital strain. The heat also disrupted public events: Milan’s Pride parade was postponed to later in the day to avoid peak heat, and Frankfurt shortened triathlon cycling and running competitions. According to Reuters, temperatures during this heatwave are about 18 degrees Celsius above seasonal averages due to an "omega blocking" weather pattern trapping hot air over certain areas. With most European homes lacking air conditioning, demand for electric fans has surged, and Asian air conditioner manufacturers report sharp sales increases to Europe.
