Following an investigation lasting over a year, Israel's National Fraud Unit (Lahav 433) raided the offices of a major local authority and the homes of suspects on Monday. The operation, which became public at dawn, led to the arrest and detention of 24 individuals involved in a large-scale public corruption scheme. Among those detained are the head of the local authority, his wife, and the CEO of the authority's economic company.

Investigators suspect a well-oiled mechanism of bribery and fraud operated within the local authority. The head of the authority and the CEO of the economic company allegedly systematically favored certain businessmen, ensuring they won lucrative tenders in various municipal fields. The alleged payment for these favors was primarily in cash bribes.

A surprising aspect of the investigation is the deep and unusual involvement of the authority head's wife, who is suspected of managing bribery relations and mediating between bribe-givers and decision-makers.

Furthermore, the investigation uncovered the direct and indirect involvement of known crime organizations from central Israel. These groups are suspected of being integrated into the bribery scheme for an extended period, promoting criminal interests to secure local authority tenders. The joint activities allegedly included severe acts of violence.

During the public phase of the operation, 17 suspects, including senior management of the authority and involved businessmen, were arrested, while seven others were detained for questioning. Extensive searches of homes, offices, and businesses yielded large sums of cash and property, which are slated for confiscation. The complex investigation is closely monitored by the State Prosecutor's Office's economic department. All 24 suspects were transferred to Lahav 433 headquarters, and police emphasized that the investigation is in its early public stages. Arrest warrants will be sought for the main suspects at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate's Court.
