Indian Captain Fights Off Co-Pilot, Saves Flydubai Flight to Tel Aviv

An Indian captain, Smit Machchhar, is being hailed as a hero after he fought off his co-pilot during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, preventing a potential catastrophe. The incident occurred on a Flydubai flight when the co-pilot, identified as Omani, reportedly attacked Captain Machchhar in the cockpit. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar resisted fiercely, leading to a struggle for control of the aircraft. The article states that the plane lost approximately 14,300 feet of altitude in 37 seconds following the attack, and an emergency situation was declared with the crew transmitting the code 7500, indicating unlawful interference.

Assistance in subduing the attacker came from passengers and other crew members who intervened. Together, they managed to neutralize the co-pilot. Captain Machchhar, who has over 13 years of experience and nearly 10,000 hours of flight time on Boeing 737 aircraft, continued to fight for the plane's safety even while severely wounded. He previously served for over 11 years with Indian airline SpiceJet and also worked as a Line Training Captain, instructing and evaluating other pilots.

Following the incident, the aircraft made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. While Flydubai has not officially released the captain's name, Indian media outlets, citing sources familiar with the situation, have confirmed his identity. Captain Machchhar was hospitalized due to his injuries. The co-pilot's identity and motives are being investigated, with reports suggesting he attempted to crash the flight.
