Man Charged with Attempted Murder for Attacking Sleeping Wife with Hammer and Knife

Israeli police in the Eilat region have concluded their investigation into an attempted murder case where a man allegedly attacked his wife with a hammer and knife as she slept. The suspect, who immigrated from the Soviet Union with his wife in 1988, is accused of assaulting his wife, in her 60s, two weeks prior to the investigation's conclusion. The attack occurred in their Eilat home, with the husband reportedly using both a hammer and a knife. The victim managed to escape to a neighbor's home, bleeding, while the suspect was found outside the apartment with a knife. Police apprehended the suspect inside the blood-covered apartment and recovered the alleged weapons. During questioning, the suspect confessed to the main details of the assault and reenacted the event. He reportedly told investigators he wished for his wife's death but claimed he did not want to be the one to kill her. Investigators found no prior argument or unusual incident that triggered the attack. The couple has no prior criminal record. The victim's daughter stated that her father suffers from Alzheimer's disease, which she believes led to the violent incident, and criticized medical professionals for alleged negligence in his care. She added that her mother is recovering at home and is in shock but receiving treatment. The Southern District Prosecutor's Office is set to file an indictment for attempted murder and a request for the suspect's detention until the end of legal proceedings.
