Man Charged with Attempted Murder of Sleeping Wife in Eilat

Police in Eilat have concluded their investigation into an attempted murder case where a man allegedly attacked his wife with a hammer and knife as she slept. The suspect, who immigrated from the Soviet Union with his wife in 1988, is accused of assaulting his wife, in her 60s, two weeks ago in their Eilat apartment. The couple has no prior criminal record.

According to the investigation, the attack occurred on September 16th when the wife was sleeping on the living room sofa. The husband allegedly used a hammer and a knife, both of which were recovered from the scene. The suspect reportedly confessed to the main details of the assault and reenacted the event. He told investigators that he wished for his wife's death but claimed he did not want to be the one to kill her. There was no prior argument or unusual incident that preceded the attack.

The victim's daughter told N12 that her mother had a "very difficult experience" and is currently recovering at home. She attributed her father's actions to Alzheimer's disease, stating, "My father is sick, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease which sometimes causes incidents of violence. This is not a regular case of domestic violence." The daughter also suggested there was "medical negligence" in her father's care, as they had not received adequate assistance from either the geriatric department or National Insurance.

Following the completion of the investigation, the Southern District Prosecutor's Office is set to file an indictment for attempted murder against the suspect and request his detention until the end of legal proceedings.
