Portland Trail Blazers Prepare for New NBA Season with Key Questions

The Portland Trail Blazers are set to officially begin their training camp for the 2026-27 NBA season, with four preseason games scheduled before the October 20th opener. Among these matchups are two against the Golden State Warriors, one versus the London Lions, and another against the Kings. This period marks a significant test for both rookie head coach Mike Nouri and player Deni Avdija.

Despite a strong recent season, the Trail Blazers have undergone significant changes this summer under owner Tom Dundon. A primary focus for the team and observers is how the integration of two new point guards will affect Avdija, who has historically thrived with the ball in his hands. Coach Nouri has indicated that Avdija will be the "first option," emphasizing his importance to the team's offense. Avdija himself averaged nearly seven minutes of possession per game in the first half of last season, a high mark in the league, and his performance with the ball is seen as crucial to the team's ceiling.

Veteran star Damian Lillard, now fully recovered and notably leaner, is expected to resume his role as the primary point guard. Lillard expressed confidence in distributing the ball to new teammates like Ja Morant and Avdija, stating he would "feel good" about such plays. He also noted that Morant's playing style is similar to that of Giannis Antetokounmpo, with whom Lillard has previously collaborated effectively. The team's offense is anticipated to rely on drives to the basket from Avdija, Lillard, and Morant, with the presence of multiple ball-handlers potentially creating easier scoring opportunities for Avdija.

Avdija, feeling nearly 100% healthy after a summer focused on efficient movement and recovery, acknowledged that his role might shift from carrying a heavy offensive load, as he did last season with a depleted roster and a rookie coach, to a more balanced contribution, potentially with increased defensive responsibilities. His usage rate is expected to decrease, but his efficiency could rise, contributing to the team's overall success.

Regarding Avdija's contract extension, which he is eligible to sign starting soon, General Manager Cronin indicated that while he hopes for a resolution within a year or two, an immediate signing before the season is unlikely. Cronin also highlighted Avdija's importance by mentioning he contacted him, along with other key players, after the Morant trade to ensure alignment.
