Deni Avdija Embraces New Role, Focuses on Season Amid Contract Talks

Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija is preparing for a shift in his role with the Portland Trail Blazers, seeing it as an opportunity for growth. Speaking at the team's "Media Day," Avdija expressed optimism about playing alongside star guards Ja Morant and Damian Lillard, viewing their presence as a significant positive.

Avdija anticipates a faster pace and improved spacing for the Trail Blazers with the new backcourt dynamic. He has discussed his expectations with coach Chauncey Billups, who wants Avdija to remain confident and aggressive, even with a reduced role in ball-handling. Billups aims for Avdija to take more shots and have easier scoring opportunities.

Recovered from a back injury that hampered him last season, Avdija declared himself "99.9%" ready for the upcoming season, noting that he has focused on efficient movement and received additional physical therapy over the summer. He also acknowledged Lillard's extensive experience and leadership, stating that his presence will be beneficial both on and off the court.

Avdija also reflected on his own experience managing the game from the point guard position during the previous season due to injuries, which he found valuable for his development. Regarding his contract extension, Avdija stated he trusts his representatives and is concentrating solely on the upcoming season, leaving negotiations to them.

He also commented on the ongoing arena agreement discussions between the team and the city, expressing hope for a resolution and trust in the parties involved.
