IDF on High Alert for Hamas Soldier Abduction Attempt Near Gaza Border

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet intelligence agency have raised the alert level for military divisions operating in the Gaza Strip due to concerns that Hamas may attempt to abduct a soldier. Senior commanders have ordered all units to remain in their sectors, conduct rigorous readiness checks, and increase vigilance among forces positioned along the "yellow line" and near the border fence. Military officials are worried that the absence of a physical barrier along the "yellow line" could make it easier for terrorist cells to approach positions and drag a soldier into the Strip.

A senior military source indicated that Hamas is attempting to engineer a "Gilad Shalit scenario" before the upcoming elections in Israel and the United States. This move is seen as an effort by Hamas to escape a cycle of losses, especially after over 600 terrorists, including brigade and battalion commanders, were eliminated in the Strip over the past year, and more than 80 percent of its underground tunnels were destroyed.

Despite the recent declaration by the IDF Chief of Staff that Hamas has been defeated, the Southern Command is observing signs of rebuilding and fears that a kidnapping operation could draw Israel into an escalation under American constraints. Earlier, Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened that if an Israeli soldier or civilian is abducted, "the entire city of Gaza, with its homes and terror towers, will be evacuated southward with its million residents," to underscore the severe price Israel would exact for any attempt to harm its soldiers.
