IDF Prepares for Hamas Attempt to Abduct Soldier Near Gaza Border

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency are preparing for a potential attempt by Hamas to abduct an Israeli soldier in the Gaza Strip in the near future, based on intelligence information. In response to existing warnings, the alert level has been raised for the two divisions deployed in the Gaza Strip: the Regional Division and Division 99. Senior commanders in every unit have been instructed not to leave the area and to conduct readiness checks among their forces. Forces are positioned within the "red line" (the area immediately adjacent to the Gaza border fence), in 40 outposts, with an additional 10 outposts located outside the fence. The lack of a physical barrier along this "red line" raises concerns about a possible attempt by a terrorist cell to approach one of the positions near the outposts, abduct a soldier, and drag them into the Strip. The IDF fears such an action could lead to renewed escalation, potentially under American restrictions that might limit Israel's response due to upcoming elections in both the US and Israel.

The concern about an abduction attempt is not theoretical. In recent weeks, reports have emerged of IDF preparations for Hamas revenge scenarios following a series of targeted assassinations in Gaza. Potential scenarios examined include attacks on IDF forces and attempts to abduct soldiers near the "red line." A senior military official stated that Hamas views this as an opportune time to replicate the Gilad Shalit abduction before elections in Israel and the US. The official emphasized the need to avoid operational errors that could allow Hamas to break the current situation, where Israel is daily eliminating its senior operatives and embarrassing it militarily and intelligence-wise. Such an act, the official added, would be seen as a sign of weakness and an attempt by Hamas to regain honor and alter the equation with Israel, as abduction is their last remaining leverage.

Southern Command has identified attempts by Hamas to rebuild its capabilities, though not to their pre-October 7th levels. Defense Minister Israel Katz previously threatened that if an Israeli soldier or civilian were abducted, the entire city of Gaza, with its homes and terror towers, would be evacuated southward, displacing a million residents. This threat, aimed at preventing Hamas from initiating a war within Gaza City, contrasts with Hamas's perception of an opportunity for abduction due to perceived Israeli limitations. Sources indicate Hamas believes now is the time for such an operation. Despite the IDF Chief of Staff's declaration that Hamas has been defeated, Southern Command acknowledges ongoing rebuilding efforts by the organization, which have not restored it to its previous strength.
