IDF Boosts Gaza Readiness Amid Kidnapping Threat

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet security agency have heightened their alert status in the Gaza Strip due to intelligence indicating a potential Hamas attempt to abduct an Israeli soldier. The heightened readiness applies to two divisions stationed in the Gaza area, the territorial division and the 99th Division. Senior commanders were instructed days ago to remain in the region and assess their troops' preparedness and vigilance. Israeli forces are positioned at 40 locations within the "yellow line" border fence and ten positions outside it. Concerns have been raised about the lack of a physical barrier along the immediate border fence, creating a vulnerability for militants to approach, abduct a soldier, and retreat into Gaza.

The IDF fears such an incident could trigger a new escalation, potentially complicated by anticipated U.S. restrictions on Israel's response due to ongoing elections in both countries. This follows recent reports of the military preparing for possible Hamas retaliation after a series of targeted assassinations in Gaza, which included scenarios of attacks on Israeli forces and soldier abductions near the border.

A senior military source stated that Hamas is attempting to replicate the Gilad Shalit abduction scenario before the elections, aiming to regain prestige and alter the balance of power. The source explained that Hamas views this as a potential opportunity due to anticipated limited Israeli retaliation, seeing abduction as its last remaining leverage. This comes after Defense Minister Israel Katz warned on September 22, 2026, that if an Israeli soldier or civilian is abducted, the entire population of Gaza City, approximately one million people, would be evacuated southward.

Despite the current alert, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reportedly declared at a closed meeting that Hamas has been defeated. Southern Command data indicates that over 600 Hamas members, including commanders, have been eliminated in the year since the last ceasefire, with over 80% of their tunnel network destroyed. While Hamas is attempting to rebuild its capabilities, military sources assess it remains far from its pre-October 7 strength.
