Portland Trail Blazers GM Optimistic About Extending Deni Avdija's Contract

Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Joe Cronin expressed optimism regarding the potential contract extension for Israeli forward Deni Avdija. Speaking at media day ahead of the 2026-2027 NBA season, Cronin stated that the team is actively working on Avdija's contract, acknowledging its complexity but asserting confidence in reaching an agreement.

"It's something we're very busy with, investing a lot of time," Cronin said. "His contract is complicated, it's not a simple extension. We can extend his contract starting October 2nd. We will need to negotiate to extend his contract, and we will need to use what we have left up to the salary cap. We are trying to time it well so that his needs and ours are met."

Cronin compared the situation to that of Scottie Henderson and indicated he is not worried about the team's ability to finalize the deal within the next year or two. Avdija is set to earn $13.125 million this season and $11.875 million in 2027-2028. His current contract allows for an extension of up to 140%, which would still place him below his perceived market value.

In the previous season, Avdija averaged 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, including an impressive 7.4 made free throws out of 9.2 attempts, one of the highest rates in the NBA. Cronin also mentioned that he had spoken with Avdija and other backcourt players, including those acquired in the trade for Ja Morant, to ensure alignment on building a talented team that requires collective sacrifice to become a winning unit.
