Portland Trail Blazers GM Optimistic About Extending Deni Avdija's Contract

Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Joe Cronin expressed optimism regarding contract extension talks with Israeli forward Deni Avdija during the team's media day on Monday, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Cronin stated that extending Avdija's contract is a complex process, not a simple renewal, and that negotiations will need to take place within the team's salary cap constraints. He indicated that the team is working to time the extension effectively to meet both Avdija's and the team's needs, comparing the situation to that of Scottie Henderson. Cronin is hopeful the extension will be finalized within the next one to two years.

Cronin also addressed the team's acquisition of player Ja Morant, explaining that he had spoken with key backcourt players, including Avdija, to ensure alignment on building a talented team that requires learning to play together. He emphasized the need for individual sacrifices to create a winning team and stated the goal is to maximize the team's quality.

Avdija is set to earn $13.125 million in the upcoming season and $11.875 million in 2027-2028. His current contract allows for an extension of up to 140%, which would still place his salary below his perceived market value. Last season, Avdija averaged 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, notably shooting 7.4 out of 9.2 free throws per game, a high mark in the NBA.
