Portland Trail Blazers GM Optimistic About Extending Deni Avdija's Contract

Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Joe Cronin expressed optimism regarding contract extension talks with Israeli forward Deni Avdija during the team's media day on Monday, ahead of the 2026-2027 season. Cronin stated that extending Avdija's contract is a complex process, not a simple renewal, and that negotiations will need to take place within the team's salary cap limitations. He indicated that the team is working to time the extension effectively to meet both Avdija's and the team's needs, comparing the situation to that of Scottie Henderson. Cronin is hopeful the extension will be finalized within the next one to two years.

Cronin also addressed the acquisition of player Ja Morant, explaining that he had spoken with key backcourt players, including Avdija, to ensure alignment on building a talented team that requires players to make sacrifices. He emphasized the goal of becoming a high-quality, winning team.

Avdija, who is set to earn $13.125 million in the upcoming season and $11.875 million in 2027-2028, can extend his current contract by a maximum of 140%. This provision means his extended salary would likely still be below his true market value. Last season, Avdija averaged 24.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game, notably shooting 7.4 out of 9.2 free throws per game, a high percentage in the NBA.
