Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir Visits Temple Mount During Sukkot

Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir visited the Temple Mount in Jerusalem during the Sukkot holiday. The visit, reported by The Times of Israel, occurred on September 28, 2026. Ben-Gvir stated that since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel has gained reasons for "joy," despite the "heavy mark" left by the events. He asserted that Israel now controls the Temple Mount and the prison system, with harsher conditions for "terrorist prisoners." The minister also emphasized the importance of arming the public and establishing civil security squads, believing Israel is progressing towards "complete victory" and validating his political approach.

The Temple Mount is a site of immense religious significance, considered the holiest place in Judaism and the Noble Sanctuary by Muslims, housing the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel manages security, while the Islamic Waqf organization oversees religious affairs. Jewish prayer is officially prohibited on the mount, though Ben-Gvir, who oversees the Israeli police, has repeatedly argued for its permissibility. This stance contrasts with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official position, which has stated that Jewish prayer is not allowed.
