IDF Extends Drone Halt After Fatal Gaza Blast

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has extended a halt on the use of "Atalef" attack drones until Sunday, October 4th, as a precautionary measure following a fatal incident last week. The decision came after an "Atalef" drone exploded near Beit Hanoun in Gaza, killing two reservist soldiers, Staff Sergeant Major (Res.) Nadav Kali, 24, and Staff Sergeant Major (Res.) Ofek Moalem, 23.

The "Atalef" drone, used by the IDF in operational activities across all fronts since the war began, exploded near the soldiers while they were at a nearby outpost. The soldiers had been operating two drones; the first launch was successful, but the second drone crashed within the outpost. When the soldiers approached the crashed drone, it detonated.

Following the incident, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi ordered the formation of an expert team, headed by a Brigadier General from the Ground Forces, to investigate the circumstances of the explosion. The investigation will determine whether the cause was a technical malfunction or potentially electronic warfare interference by Hamas, though the latter is considered unlikely due to Hamas's presumed lack of such capabilities.

The Ground Forces Commander held a situation assessment and decided to extend the pause on attack drones as a preventative measure. The IDF announced the initial halt on Saturday. The directive states that on Sunday, depending on the situation assessment, brigades will be permitted to resume using attack drones for required operations, provided they report on their execution.
